In the event the normal physical production environment (where personnel perform work) no longer functions, the organization will require an alternate processing capability to remain viable.

The use of an alternate location might involve only those personnel and assets necessary to perform critical functions, until such time as the organization can resume full production, or it might involve relocating the entire organization, or some blend of critical and noncritical functions (but not full production). The choice of approach will differ between organizations based on senior management decision.

Proximity and accessibility are key strategic considerations in alternate site planning. The site should be far enough away from the primary location to avoid being affected by the same disaster, such as a regional power outage, flood, or wildfire, but not so distant that personnel, equipment, or data cannot be transported efficiently. If severe weather or supply chain issues are likely, access routes and transportation options must be reviewed and documented. Organizations should also consider any legal or regulatory restrictions that might apply in a different state or jurisdiction, especially in heavily regulated industries like healthcare or finance.

Equally important is the cost and suitability of maintaining the alternate site over time.

Whether leasing space, maintaining a warm or hot site, or contracting with a thirdparty provider, the financial and resource commitments must be weighed against the risk.

The solution must be not only cost-justified but also maintainable over the long term, meaning the site is kept updated, accessible, and equipped to support evolving business needs. Neglecting these factors can lead to an alternate site that looks good on paper but fails when it's actually needed.
